As a midnight deadline loomed on Monday night, it had become clear that Elon Musk and his “Department of Government Efficiency” hit their first speed bump in the move-fast-and-break-things tech-style smash-and-grab of federal agencies.

To be clear, DOGE is not a real department, it is a renaming of the US Digital Service and currently isn’t being treated like a real agency by the White House, according to a new report from ProPublica that found DOGE’s budget has “soared to $40 million” while skirting transparency laws that govern actual government departments.
